  • Walnuts

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Superior to Cholesterol Meds…

I previously mentioned a study linking natural benefical bacteria supplements (probiotics) to lower cholesterol levels. Now there is another recent study on how you can safely and naturally reduce cholesterol without the risk of drugs.

Swine Flu Symptoms and Treatment of Swine Influenza

woman blowing noseThe recent growing Swine Flu problem has not reached a pandemic state yet, but requires thoughtful response by medical professionals and the public. This flu may be no worse to many who contract it than any other seasonal flu, but for some it could prove deadly. The important thing is to understand what the symptoms of swine flu are and how to care for it.

Swine flu may look like any other flu:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sneeze
  • Sore throat
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

If the above symptoms are mild then rest and fluids at home are appropriate measures to undertake. Do NOT go to work or school for at least 7 days after appearance of flu symptoms to avoid contamination of larger groups and spread of the disease.

When symptoms are moderate to severe, you should consult your family phsyicican, urgent care center or local hosipital.

Warning signs warranting immediate medical treatment:

  • Typical flu symptoms plus any of the following:
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Bluish coloration to lips
  • Severe cough
  • Vomiting and inability to keep fluids down
  • High or persisting fever
  • Lack of responsiveness, lethargy, confusion

Swine Flu prevention:

  • Do not travel to Mexico
  • Stay away from large groups of people in crowded spaces
  • Carry antibacterial hand sanitizer in your pocket or purse
  • Wash hands thoroughly several times a day, particularly after shaking hands or using public facilities such as door handles, pay phones, shopping carts, etc.
  • Avoid sick people; coughing, sneezing, fever, etc
  • Get lots of rest
  • Drink lots of water
  • Take multivitamins and immune boosters like Emergen-C or Airborne daily
  • Keep your hands away from your nose and mouth

Among the many types of headaches, back of the head pain or occipital headaches are among the most common.  Pain in the back of the head often described as a “dull ache,” “tension” and sometimes “tingling” or “prickly” are most often the result of two possible causes.

1. Muscle tension headache
Muscle tightness or spasm of the muscles on the back of the skull (occipital muscles) or back of the neck causes head pain.  Muscle tension headaches are usuallyc asued by chronic postural strain, accidents and stress.

2. Vertebrogenic headache
Ver-tee-bro-jen-ik headaches are the result of misalignment of the spinal bones (vertebrae) of the upper neck. Some experts cite these headaches as the most common type of headache.  Most agree that vertebrogenic headaches and muscle tension headaches often occur in tandem and are usually the result of strains, posture and stress.

New Year; Perfect Time to Clean Up Your Colon…

It’s a good idea to detoxify and cleanse your digestive system, blood and liver 1-4 times each year. With the new year on us, now is the perfect time to do this.

You can go out and order lots of products online and in health food stores to detoxify and cleanse, but you don’t have to. You can easily make your own cleansing products from all natural ingredients without the risk of adverse reactions to strange herbs or other ingredients.

Here is a basic detoxify/cleanse routine based on the famous lemonade fast with modifications for practicality and safety.

Lemonade-Fruit-Vegetbale Detox Program

This is a simple detox-cleanse program. It is a fast short 3-day fast for detoxification, followed by a 3-day liquid diet for cleansing. You may find sites advocating true fasts for several days such as the water or lemonade fast. Those are fine for some people, but many people with medical problems and others require monitoirng. This is a short term program to detoxify the body and should be safe for most people.

As always consult your physician before embarking on any new diet or exercise program. 

What you will need:

A good juicer

Lemons, maple syrup, cayenne pepper powder, distilled water, apples, dark red pitted cherries, red or purple grapes, carrots, cucumber, celery, and parsley. Recipes follow.

Days 1-3 Lemonade Detox

This stage is to chemically detoxify your body. During this period you do not eat any food. You are resticted to drinking the special lemonade and pure distilled water only. Most people will drink 6-10 glasses of lemonade a day depending on body size. During this stage you may feel headaches, grouchiness, tired, and dizzy. After 3 days you may notice a coated tongue. These are typical signs of detoxification.

You will most likley need to stay close to a restroom durign the first 3 days. So begin it on a Friday, so that when Monday rolls around you will be able to work without worry as the next stage is less intense.

Day 4-6 Fruit-Vegetable Juice Cleanse

During this stage you are detoxifying, but more importantly cleaning out your colon with the fiber from the fruits and vegetables. The fruit drink is also said to detoxify your blood.

Drink 2-3 glasses of fruit cleanse and 2-3 glasses of vegetable cleanse daily. You may also drink distilled water. You are still not eating food yet, but the fruits and vegetables will give you plenty of nutrients and generally you will feel pretty strong during this stage.

Afterwards, when you return to food, do it gradually and gently. Don’t rush out and eat a steak or a “Double-Double!” Begin with fruits and vegetables, yougurt with nuts or granola, brown rice, soups, salads, etc. Gradually re-introduce meats such as skinless chicken, turkey, fish, pork and some beef if you like.

Lemonade detox recipe (yields one-half gallon):lemon

  • 8 ounces of freshly squeezed lemon  juice
  • 8 ounces of maple syrup (look for grade B) 
  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper powder 
  • half gallon distilled waterMix ingredients well in a pitcher and refrigerate.

grapesFruit Juice Cleanser ( 2 servings)

2 cups of red or purple grapes
2 apples
2 cups pitted dark red cherries

Make this fresh at most 2 servings at a time. Drink soon after making and keep refrigerated.

Vegetable Juice Cleanser (2 servings):carrots

  • 3 carrots
  • 1 cucumber (peeled)
  • 6 celery stalks
  • handful of parsley

 

What Should You Expect with This Program?

  • You should expect to have a cleaner, more efficient colon
  • You should expect to lose anywhere from 5-15 pounds (yes, lots of water, but also gunk that has been hiding in the walls of your colon)
  • You should expect to feel more energetic and possibly sleep better

Thanksgiving…What To Do When You Eat Too Much

What To Do When You Eat Too Much at Thanksgivingcornucopia

Okay, so you overindulge over the next few days. That’s okay. It’s our one day to feas and be thankful for all we have as a nation.

But Thanksgiving more than any other holiday, is a day in which many people end up sick; stomach aches, heartburn, diarrhea, vomitting are all unpleasant side effects of our patriotic binging.

So what do you do when you’ve over done it?

Here are some helpful tips for…

Stomach ache and Heartburn Remedies:

  • Take a quarter teaspoon of baking soda in 6 oz. of water, drink and wait for a tremendous belch. Once you burp up, the heartburn will resolve.   
  • Take half a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in 6 oz water. This will not result in a big belch, but will quickly dissipate the heartburn pain.

Both appear to be equally effective for most people, although for some reason I find more relief in the baking soda remedy.

For overstuffed tummies that are painful, do the baking soda or vinegar remedy and walk around a bit. If you sit or lie down you may end up putting more pressure on your already distened stomach and cause regurge.

After a few minutes, try lying face down on the floor. This often helps push gas outwards and relieve pain.

Diarrhea Remedies:

  • BRAT Diet
    What your stomach needs is for you to not stress it while you are sickly. What I advocate to my patients is called the B.R.A.T. diet.

          It’s an acronym that stands for:

        B: Bananas

        R: Rice (plain white)

        A: Applesauce (or finely smashed apples)

        T: Toast (dry)

These foods are easy on the tummy and provide nourishment to keep your strength up.    This temporary diet can be used for a few days and is appropriate for small children to adults.

  • Hydration
    Also sipping small amounts of room temperature water with a lemon slice constantly, being careful not to fill up your stomach, will help keep you hydrated.

Vomitting Remedies:
First determine if the vomitting occurs due to overstuffing your tummy versus food poisoning, an unfortunate but common illness on Thanksgiving.

Overstuffed tummies hurt, but don’t cause fever, chills, sweating, dizziness, etc. Those are all signs of infection. Overstuffed tummies are a common cause of vomitting in children. Their eyes are way bigger than their little bellies, so they gorge and soon after vomit. 

**If children show signs of infection such as fever, chills, sweating, dizziness, etc after eating Thanksgiving dinner, you are advised to go to an urgent care or ER just to be safe. E-coli and salmonella poisoning can be very serious in children, sometimes deadly. So don’t mess around  with those symptoms.

Vomitting remedy
Keep the stomach empty (no food, no water, nothing) until you have not vomitted for a few hours. If you put something in the stomach, you will continue to vomit, so keep it empty.

After the vomitting has subsided for a few hours, go on the BRAT diet for a day.

I pray that you will all have a memorable Thanksgiving without needing this advice, but just in case, you now know what to do.
